National Brain Injury Prevention and Awareness Tour Stopped at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC – On Monday, January 31st the Sarah Jane Brain Project (SJBP) hosted a town hall at Levine Children’s Hospital.

The SJBP presented the Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Plan (PABI) to an audience of medical professionals and other interested parties. In addition to discussing the PABI plan, the panel tackled the often asked question of “How Do We Prevent, Identify and Treat Concussions In Youth?”

David G. Jacobs, M.D. of Carolinas Medical Center, Departments of General Surgery and Critical Care Medicine spoke about his experience in treating an individual who have sustained a brain injury. He answered many questions regarding acute management from initial injury through inpatient rehab. Lori M. Grafton, M.D., the Director of the Brain Injury Program at Carolinas Rehabilitation spoke about the actual process of inpatient rehab. Tami Guerrier, LRT/CTRS, CBIST, Assistant Director of the Carolinas Rehabilitation Research Department spoke about the importance of family resources for those who have suffered a brain injury.

As a Sports Medicine Physician at Carolinas Back and Sports Specialists, David E. Price, M.D. covered the acute treatment of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and sports related concussions. Research Scientist at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Carolinas Medical Center Mark A. Hirsch, Ph.D., covered the topic of how to translate brain injury research into practical treatment for patients.
