HOUSTON, TX – On Tuesday, February 8th the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation’s national tour came to Children’s Memorial Hermann to participate in the Town Hall Meeting on “Acute Care” of Pediatric Acquired Brain Injuries
The event was moderated by Dr. Charles S. Cox Jr, who is the Children’s Fund Distinguished Professor and Director of the Pediatric Trauma Program at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Dr. Rebecca Girardet, is an Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She is also the Medical Director, UT-CARE Center. She spoke about the fact that Child Protective Services (CPS) does not really provide funding for ongoing care once children are in foster care. She also explained to the audience that children who suffer brain injury as result of abuse tend to not recover as well as those who suffer a brain injury as a result of an accident.
Patrick Donohue, Founder of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, spoke about his personal experience with youth brain injury. Dr. James E. Baumgartner, MD, Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, University of Texas Medical School at Houston/Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital also spoke at the panel and covered issues pertaining to the acute care of brain injuries. The crowd also heard from Julie Zurek, RN, EMT-P who is a Flight Nurse for Memorial Hermann Life Flight. She spoke about the emotional toll that this type of work can have on people and the need for support in dealing with such traumatic brain injuries.
