In 2009, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital was named the State Lead Center of Excellence for the PABI (Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury) plan for Nebraska to implement the National Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Plan (PABI Plan) developed by the National Advisory Board of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation. Madonna represents the state in efforts to expand research, develop protocols and build awareness of PABI, the leading cause of death and disability for children under 15 years of age in the United States. More than 3 million new cases resulting in 643,000 emergency room visits, 80,000 hospital admissions, 17,000 permanent disabilities and 12,500 deaths occur each year to children and young adults up to 25 years old in the United States. The mission of the Sarah Jane Brain Project is to fully fund and implement the National PABI Plan, which creates a seamless, standardized, evidence-based system of care that is universally accessible for all children and young adults with PABI, regardless of where they live in the nation.

Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital opened The Alexis Verzal Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital in July 2011 with $1.2 million funding by the Git-R-Done Foundation. The new facility provides the most advanced rehabilitation care for children from infant to 18-years of age. The Alexis Verzal Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital at Madonna is accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission as a Pediatric Specialty Program in areas of comprehensive inpatient hospital, brain injury, spinal cord injury and comprehensive outpatient programs.
